Sticky Presentations bite size article: Vary font size to acheive clarity

Vary font size to acheive clarity

Jun 04, 2015

Text and numbers are often what we use to communicate our ideas in presentation slides. We always need to ensure that key information are shown clearly so that they are visible to our audience. Varying the font size of selected parts of the text can often bring out key information giving it the clarity it deserves.

When showing a currency value, displaying the currency symbol in a slightly smaller font size will increase the clarity of the value displayed. This can also apply to percentage type information. Reducing the font size of the percentage symbol will increase the clarity of the percentage value displayed.

This technique is not limited to just the above, but can be applied to other texts where emphasis is needed for a specific word. In this case, we will slightly increase the font size of the word in question.

Here are examples of before and after effects of varying font sizes.

BEFORE. Text size consistent. The key message is not very clear.

AFTER. Reducing the size of lesser importance text brings out clarity in the message.
